NO MORE BEACH PATROLS FOR CHRISTCHURCH.
LACK OF SUPPORT
As a result of public apathy, the Canterbury Surf and Life-saving Association lias decided to discontinue the beach patrols until the public manifests some interest and affords support in the maintenance of the patrols (states the Christchurch Times). At last Tuesday’s meeting of the association the secretary (Mr I). V. Wilson) reported that the beach patrols at Sumner, New Brighton, and North Beach had finished owing to lack of funds. Tin) president (.Mr C. A. Cooper) stated that over 500 rescues had been .effected by members of the Canterbury life-saving clubs. It .was seldom that the people resettled returned even thanks to those who, often at the risk of their own Jives, had saved them. Monetary contributions to the clubs were verv rare. “It costs the Government about £3OO to land and settle an immigrant, and, at this valuation the 500 1 odd lives saved on the beaches are worth over £150,000 to the country,” said AH Cooper. Other delegates agreed, and it is unlikely that any permanent paid beach patrols will be maintained next summer.
