RECLAMATION WORK AT MANAWATU HEADS.

EXTENSIVE TREE PLANTING BEING CARRIED OUT

BY FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD

The late Mr. W. Bock, who for many years was secretary to the M>xton Harbour Board, had always been a keen advocate for the carrying out of tree planting at Manawatu Heads. During his term of office, however, the Board did not take any steps in this connection, but the matter has engaged the attention of Board members of recent years and a certain amount of tree planting has been carried out. The secretary (Mr. R. Rangiheuea) has been particularly enthusiastic as to the benefits to accrue from such a policy and has actively engaged himself in the work as time

and funds permitted. The greater portion of the sandy waste to the west of the river foreshore has now been planted and some of the trees near, the residential end aye now several feet high and already offering excellent shelter for camping parties. In his report to the Foxton Harbour Board yesterday the secretary stated that during tire past month, together with the storeman, he had been engaged in planting a further supply of trees at the Heads. .

“There will be sufficient employment for a. dozen or more <men for three weeks if funds will allow,” he' said, “and during the coming winter I hope to engage a number of men to carry out marx*am planting by contract as I shall not always be free to overseer day labour employees. If we are able to establish marram and lupin light to t lie high water mark on both banks of the river and the sea to the same degree as obtains at Paraparaumu and Paekakariki the bar will receive unbounded benefits as well as the sections now on the market.” The secretary sought the co-op-eration and sanction of the Board in arranging details of the work to lie carried out before next May and said that there was on hand 281bs. of lupin seed for sowing during the month of August. It was agreed that it was desirable to do as much planting as possible and the matter was left in the hands of the secretary.
