ACQUISITION OF NATIVE LAND

FOR TREE PLANTING

The initial steps taken in the acquisition of a strip of sandy country .on the south sitle of the Manawatii River for tree planting with a view to protecting the channel were reported on by Mr. R. Edwards, who bad been deputed to take the matter up, at yesterday’s meeting of tin* Foxlon Harbour Board. Mr. Edwards said that acting on Mr. Nash’s motion, he had taken the first steps necessary to acquire the property. The work was progressing very slowly but it. was an important matter from the Board’s point of view. He now .-ought the sanction of the. Board to convene a meeting of the Natives concerned at an early date in furtherance of the proposal.

Air. Nash: The Board will not he involved in any expense I suppose.’

Mr. Edwards said that no expense would be incurred whatever, but it was now necessary to meet the owners of tin* land and come to some terms. Correspondence from tin* (tovei'iiment on the matter had so far been quite favourable

and (bey should not allow the matter to drag now as they might find it dangerous to the consummationof the scheme.

Mr. Edwards was given permission to interview the Native owners on the matter and before leaving lie arranged with the secretary to convene a meeting at an early date.
