BETTER ACCESS TO THE BEACH.

HARBOUR BOARD DISCUSSES READING MATTERS.

Better beach roading facilities were discussed at yesterday’s meeting of the ,Eoxton Harbour Board, the matter being introduced by Mr. 11. 1). Gray, of Palmerston North, requesting access to his section in the Sanatorium. Mr. Nash said he was anxious to see something done to improve the Beach roads, lie suggested that Air. Barber obtain an estimate from the County engineer for putting the mad through from the main road near''tin* concrete bridge to the river beach via the Sanatorium, and also for putting a track over the hills giving access to sections at present inaccessible. “It is a shame,” said Mr. Nash, “that the mad through has not been completed.”

Mr. W. E. Barber said that in the first place* a loan of £3OOO was raised by the Manawatii County Council to put down a road to the seaside. Of that amount £4OOO had to be found by the Eoxton Borough Council and Harbour Board respectively. To raise its amount, the Board collected a reading rate of 42/0 per annum from Beach sec-tion-holders and handed the amount over to the Manawatii County ICouneil as a set off against its portion of interest and sinking fund.

Air. Nash said that he understood that in 1928 the Board had a surplus of £9O in hand in connection with the Beach reading rate. If that was so something should Ik done to improve the roads. Air. Barber said that- the best way over the reading difficulty would be for the Board, it it could, t<, raise a loan for road improvements. It was pointed out, however, that the Board could not arrange snob ;i loan. The secretary suggested Unit, the road be dedicated to the Manawatii County Council but Mr. Burlier said that the Council would not be able to consider such a proposal at present.

it was decided that an estimate be, procured for Uie work by Mr. Barber from the Manawatii County Council engineer.
