INCOME TAX RETURNS.

WARNING FROM THE CHIEF

.JUSTICE

Income-tax returns demanded by the Government are required to show what persons earn, not what they have left over after paying the year’s expenses. A witness in the Supreme Court at Wellington on Tuesday showed an ignorance of the law on the question, and because the law does not countenance ignorance, lie earned a gentle rebuke from the Chief Justice, Sir .Michael Myers. “Did it over occur to you to make income-tax returns?” asked counsel when witness was being questioned concerning his takings in bis business.

“No, it did not, because I had very heavy expenses,’’ witness replied. “You say you were drawing £450 a year?” His Honour said.

Witness: Yes, that is so. His Honour: But you have to pay income-tax on that.

Witness: But I had a lot of doctor's expenses. Tlis Honour: It does not matter; that is all profit. You can throw your money in the sea if von like, but that does not avert your liability for income-tax. You pay on the money you make, not on wliat is left over.
