MEETING OF THE COUNCIL,
Lhe Manawatu County Council met at Sanson on Tuesday, Cr. W. E. Barber (chairman) presiding. There were also present Crs. H.” H. Hunt, -I. Boyce, D. W. Reid, W. E. Pearce, IT. -1. Porrott and J. F. MeKelvie.
CORRESPONDENCE ‘The following correspondence was dealt with: —■ From the Treasury, forwarding '.€2,442 3Ss subsidy on rates due to the county. —Received. From the Oroya Downs Drainage Board, advising that, it would cost £l7O fo clean out the drains. 01. I his sum, £SO had been promised as donations, leaving £l2O to he collected from the ratepayers.—The chairman reported that he had aL tended a meeting of the settlers, und everything was in order. From Mrs R. M. Ten-ill, Moutoa, requesting permission to erect a two foot hank along her property to protect it from flood waters oi (he Manawatu river. —-Granted. From Mr F. The rate collector reported that since the last meeting of the coun-
cil the rates had been coming in very freely. Of the general rates struck, amounting to £1.1,31!) fls Hd, the sum of £12,050 I.ls 5d had been paid, leaving outstanding £1,007 11s 10<1. The position regarding arrears of rates was not so satisfactory, hut the collector hoped to report an improvement before the end of the limuieial year. TRAFFIC INSPECTOR'S REPORT The Traffic Inspector (Mr W. Berry) reported that since the final notices to mit blackberry and lupin had been * sent mil, a good deal *>i clearing had been done. Much
time had been spent checking up the speed of heavy lorries, and oc driver lmd been lined £3 and costs, while another that day had been lined £1 and costs for exceeding the maximum speed allowed, was intedod to continue apprehending offenders of this type until they ,-ut their speed down lo something near that allowed by. the regulations.
