The Mayor outlined the object of the meeting and said the Clerk had been busy preparing a comprehensive report on the outstanding- accounts. It would be the duty of ‘Councillors to give careful consideration to each individual account and then pass whatever resolution may he thought fit. He expressed the hope, however, that Councillors would mingle mercy with justice before taking any drastic action. There was such a 'large amount outstanding on the hooks, however, lhat some action must he taken and whatever amounts could not be collected would have to be struck off. The Town Clerk, who with his assistant, has spent two weeks in compiling the list of outstanding accounts, stated that there were 190 outstanding accounts on the Council’s hooks totalling in all £4,Itiil 0/(1. Of that amount, however, £ISOO was principal owing on account of the Water and Drainage Bonn which did not mature until March of this year. Tt was within the hounds of possibility that all this money might be paid when demand was made. It was really not overdue until next month but was nevertheless a liability less than a month away and hence had been included in the list. After some discussion it was decided to consider the accounts in committee, a motion to that effect being carried on the motion of Crs. Thompson and Cowley.

The examination, of accounts occupied the attention of Councillor's for some hours and at the conclu--.ion il was decided to adopt the procedure outlined in each individual ease. In some instances sections will he put up for auction in order to realise the amount due to the Council for rates while in other eases debtors will be proceeded against in the Magistrate’s Court.
