FATAL DRINKING BOUT

USE OF METHYLATED

-SPIRITS

An inquest was held last Friday at Tnumarumii into the death of Walter Richard Leary, who died in Taumiarunui Hospital. Deceased was a single man, aged about 54.

Dr. E. Vivion said that Leary had been drinking heavily and that lie was appeairently seriously ill. Witness ordered deceased’s immediate removal to the hospital and saw Leary after his admission. Deceased told witness lie had been drinking heavily for a month, first home-made beer and when that ran out methylated spirits. At the hospital deceased was given stimulants’ hut these had no effect on the condition of his heart, which had become wons-e and he died on Tuesday evening, December 17. Death was due to acute methylated spirits poisoning. The coroner, Mr. A. S. Laird, returned a. verdict of death due to alcoholic poisoning. Therc v were no suspicious circumstances, hut lie had deemed it advisable to hold an inquest in order that the public might know of the appalling results that followed the drinking of methylated spirits. This case might serve as a warning.
