HUTT BY-ELECTION.
OFFJfciIAL COUNT COMPLETED. MR, NA SH RETURNED. By a majority of 212, Mr. W. Nash (Labour) has been returned to Parliament as representative ofthe Hutt constituency. This figure was announced at the conclusion of the official count of the votes cast at the by-election on Wednesday. Wien the preliminary results were announced Mr. Nash had a lead of 156' votes over his nearest opponent, Mr. J. Kerr (United), the Reform candidate (Mr. H. Johnston) then being too far behind to be affected by the postal absentee, and other votes outstanding, which totalled approximately 657. The scrutiny of the roll took place on Thursday, and a start was made on Friday with the official count of the ballot papers in which process the votes outstanding were taken account of. THE FINAL FIGURES. The count, which was virtually completed on Saturday, gives the following final result: — Nash (Labour) 5047 Kerr (United) 4835 Johnston (Reform) 2570 Informal 103 Majority for Nash 212 STATE OF PARTIES. T,he result of the by-election places the Reform Party in the position of being the strongest individual party in the House, the state of parties now being:— Reform 28 United 27 Labour 20 Independents . 4 Country 1
