FOXTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
BREAKING-UP CEREMONY.
The breaking-up ceremony and prize distribution in connection with the local District High School took place on Thursday afternoou before a large number of parents. The ceremony _ took place in the. primary department. In addressing those present Mr. F. A. Mason, head teacher, first of all thanked the parents for the splendid response to the appeal for gifts in connection with the gala afternoon held the previous day. He said the net return, would total over £33 which sum would be utilised for improvements. Referring’ to the work of the school during the year he said, that in the secondary department seven candidates had sat for the Public Service entrance and live for Matriculation. One pupil had passed in group 1 of teacher’s D certificate and three had obtained partial passes in the same group. One pupil, Arthur Murphy, had obtained a partial pass in all groups and had passed in two subjects of the teacher’s C certificate. It would be .seen, threefore, that sound and solid work 'had been done in the secondary division and success bad crowned their efforts. In the ■athletic side the secondary division bad come out on top in the triangular contests with Marton and Levin. In this connection the teachers had actively co-operated with the pupils. In the primary division 45 out of a total of 53 had gained proficiency certificates and the remainder competency. He urged parents to interview him in rechildren’s studies rather than that they should choose for themselves. The work in the lower divisions of the primary departments had been interfered with owing to sickness and staff change's; There had been no less than six different teachers in the infant department during the year. But the staff on the whole bad worked loyally and enthusiastically and the relations had been harmonious.
Mr. Ilornblow, chairman of Committee, prior to presenting the prizes, congratulated teachers and scholars on achieving such excellent results. He urged parents to be loyal to the secondary school where’ such excellent provision had been made for the continuation of the children’s studies in the higher branches of education —'both technical and academic;
