HUTT BY-ELECTION.
ALL LEADERS TAKE PART Wellington, Last Night,
With the approach of the date of the Hutt by-election, which will take place on Wednesday, the campaigns of the three candidates are drawing/ to a. close. Although the electorate is a compact one, during the campaign a very large number of meetings has been held, some of the most prominent, membei’s of the respective parties taking the platform.
To-night, Hon. H. Abniore addressed h meeting at Petone, and to-morrow, font* Ministers, Messrs Atmore, Co'bbe, Forbes and Veitch, will speak in support of Mr. J. Ken’, the Goverignerit, party’s nominee. I
'Mr. J. G. Coates has taken a prominent part in the campaign of the Reform candidate, (Mir. H. F. Johnston, while Mr. W. D. Stewart has delivered several speeches. All the more prominent members of the Labour party have worked for Mr. W. Nash, including the Wellington members of Parliament Gnd ,the Leafier Mr. H. E. Holland and Mr. T. H. Armstrong," while Mi'. P. Fraser has organised the campaign. )
The candidates’ committees disbanded before the week-end and to- ■ r.ght, (Sir Joseph Ward issued a final statement to the electors, claiming that the Government, Within the limited time during which it lias been in office, has, in spite of economic difficulties, made substantial progress in ' carrying out the policy Which he enunciated prior to the general .election. Remarking that nobody desires a general election, he argues that the Government should have the opportunity to complete its work.
