However, Foxton is to be congratulated on its win for the second time in succession, and this success is due chiefly to the intensive training done, oat of school hours, during the last few weeks. The win is all the more creditable when it is realised that Foxton District High School has a much smaller roll number than either Marton or Levin. The visitors, nevertheless, some sterling performances, particularly in the high jumping, and in some of ‘the swimming events. It was a treat to witness the fine sporting spirit in. evidence in all the contests, and so long as that is the ease nothing but good Can result from the meeting. The chance of winning the shield certainly adds zest to the performances, but we must agree with the poet who wrote: “And when the last ga-eat scorer , comes,
To write against your name; He’ll ask not if you won or lost, But how you played the game.” Considering the excellent programme and the fine organisation ’ which enabled it to be carried through smoothly it was lamentable to see so few parents. Those -who did attend saw a splendid meeting and went away thoroughly satisfied. ' .
Before the crowd dispersed Mr. Foss, headmaster of Levin, paid a tribute to the Foxton pupils on their fine showing, and called for; three cheers for Mr. Thompson, the donor of the Sheild, who has certainly done much to encourage clean, healthy rivalry on the sports field. In replying Max Mason took occasion to thank the Council for giving the use of Easton Park, and of the baths; the Tennis Club who gave the use of the courts; and the parents who were good enough to invite visiting pupils to their homes for lunch. The visitors were then taken to Che school for afternoon tea, whep-e Mr. J. K. Hornhlow, in presenting the shield, expressed the wish that next year one of the other schools might win—in fact he prophesied, that-such would be the case. Mr. Mason seconded the wish.
