THE FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
During the course of his remanks at Friday night’s smoke concert, Mr. D. Christie (vice-presi-dent) made reference to the excellent work carried out in the town by the local Chamber of Commerce. It: might come as a surprise to many, said the speaker, to learn that the Foxton' Chamber of Commerce had been the prime movers in urging upon the Government, the advisability carrying out tree planting at Tangimoana and along this coast, the proposal which the Government had carried out with credit and which had been the means of absorbing a 'great deal of unemployment. . The Chamber had also been the iprime mover in urging upon the Government the necessity for curtailment of its immigration scheme during the winter of last year t when there was so much unemployment, a (recommendation which had also been given favourable consideration. With our latest protest, however, we have not been so successful, said Air. Christie. That was the passing of a resolution recommending the Government to place the whole of any proposed increase in taxation on imports from U.S.A. As you all Know the Government did not view the recommendation with favour with the result that the whole of the burden has now been placed on the farmer which > is quite- wrong. However, the Chamber is carrying on very good work and if the erection of the new courthouse had been the only improvement due to its activities in recent years, the body had well merited its existence (applause).
