HOLIDAY ROAD TRAFFIC

NECESSITY FOR EXTRA MAINTENANCE. j

At Tuesday’s meeting of the Manawatu County (Council a letter was received from the Main Highways Board relative to the maintenance of highways during the Christmas holiday period. In some eases, the letter stated, it is the practice for local authorities to grant surfaceunen leave of absence during the Christmas period, but where heavy holiday traffic is likely to take place he board suggested that this arrangement be varied and that the Surfacemen and graders lie kept at work. In fact in some cases, to keep the road satisfactorily maintained during the Christmas period, extra labour and graders will, no doubt, be required and should be utilised.

The chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber) considered it an excellent suggestion. In discussing the matter Cr. Balrber considered that the Board should be apprised of the knowledge of the extent of gravel road which came within, the scope of the board’s remarks, as a question of additional maintenance subsidy arose. Tbe council agreed to take llic necessary action of acquainting the board and to refer the Board’s letter to tbe county engineer.
