BOROUGH COUNCIL AND BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

COUNCIL TAKES OYER ASSETS. . At last night’s Borough Council meeting a letter was read from the Foxton Beautifying Society intimating that the Society had decided to wind up its Affairs, and offering its' assets toi the Council. The Mayor (Mr, M. E. Perreau) said’ that all the Councillors would recognise the good work carried out by the Society in the past and now that that body had decided to “go into recess” for a time it would be a great pity to let the work already carried out go back. He thought the Council should accept the assets of the Society and carry on with the maintenance of the works already completed. Cr. •R. J. Thompson said it would be a great pity to see the improvements effected go hack and the Counril would be 'doing a wise thing in taking over the assets. Cr. S. E. Cowley said it was the iCoiuicil’s duty to carry on the woitk, A lot of money would have to be spent in the future to bring the improvements back to their present state if neglected now. If the Beautifying' 'Society had not done the work in the past the Council would have had to do it. The Council’s thanks should be extended to the Society for its gratis work in the interests of the borough as the town was now in a far more beautiful state than it was previously.

Cr. Barron endorsed the previous speaker’s remarks and suggested the calling of tenders for the carrying .out of" tif§ JhAintenance woVk. On the motion of Crs. Thompson and Cowley it was decided to accept the Beautifying Society’s assets and to express the Council’s -Appreciation of then- efforts in the borough. It was also resolved to call applications for the position of caretaker for the works completed, tlie drawing up of the schedule of duties being left in theffiands of the Clerk and Or. Barron.
