DEATH OF WELL-KNOWN MAORI CHIEF.
RA RENA MANAYVAROA TE AWE AWE. The sudden death occurred at Rit agio tu at an early hour on Sunday morning of Ralkena Manawaroa Te Awe Awe, (Roa Larkins). Deceased, who was 62 years of age, bad been visiting and on returning home collapsed at his gate without warning. "Deceased was a prominent chief and a well-known figure in (lie district. He was a nephew of Peoti To Awe Awe, whose statue stands in the eastern reserve in the Square at Palmerston North and after whom the Post Office chimes wore named, while his father was Hare Bakena Te Awe Awe, a halfbrother of the noted Awapuni chief. Deceased was a chief of the Rangitane tribe on his father’s side and of the Ngatiraukawas on his mother’s side. Educated at Te Aute College, lie followed farming as an occupation with success. In his time lie played representative football lor Mauawatu. He was of a. retiring disposition but took a keen interest in all matters pertaining to file welfare of his own people. He is survived by A family of six and his widow who was a Miss Winiata (Ngatiraukawa), of Levin. iV taiigi is in progress at. his home at; 'Rangiotu.
