HERRINGTON GOLF CLUB

UTND-FIP OF THE SEASON

The wind-up of the Herrington Golf Club’s 11)29 season took place on Saturday afternoon, in delightful weather. There was a good attendance.,. and members played 'Canadian foursome. The best card returned was that of M(r F. Mason mid Miss B. Robinson.

Afteir afternoon tea, the President welcomed the visitors and expressed pleasure at the large number of members present. He said 'that they had arrived at the closing of the 1929 season, which had been a success financially, but not as successful as he had wished, socially, on account of so much illness amongst the .members. For

any deficiencies in this latter respect the members had 'themselves to blame because the links and g.iecns had been maintained in better order than during any previous Season. For this happy state of affairs, thanks were due to a number of causes including the club captain, who supervised the greens, the caretaker, propitious weatheir, arid Mr. Robinson’s action in depasturing sheep upon the property. lie was vsuiie 'that those members who had striven to obtain enjoyment from the game had not 'Leeii disappointed unless perhaps Unit some members were not enthusiastic enough. It seemed that many people did not realise what a golden opportunity was presented to' them in Foxton to indulge in a recreation which in most towns was costly, but nevertheless popular because it- was one tof rthe most sociable and interesting forms of relaxation and incidentally a lest of character. Unfortunately a large number of membea'S had been stridkcn with illness and this, in no small degree, had detracted from what otherwise had been their most successful season. Fortunately, on the other hand, some new blood had been introduced and he hoped that those members who had received their baptism of the ■Royal and ancient game in 1929 would he found fit .and proper candidates for. confirmation therein in 1930. He hoped also to meet all the older addicts of the game on the links next year. He thanked the ladies who had supervised the afternoon tea arrangements during the season. Also all those who had adopted the game enthusiastically, and the members of committee, particularly the secretary, Mr. Newcon. He appealed to committeemen to give still further active support in future years. Special reference was made to the kindness tf Mr. Frank and Mrs. J. H. Robinson, who had so willingly and gratuitously placed their properties at the disposal of the Golf Club without one word of restriction upon the devastating propensities of golfers and it was hoped that the landowners would reap real satisfaction from the fact that every member of the Club were genuinely appreciative of such continued generosity. • Before presenting the trophies, the President thanked Miss' B. Robinson for her generosity in donating a . trophy for competition amongst the junior lady players. He also paid a special tribute 'to Miss G. Neylon, who had put up a sterling performance. She was a first year player yet had Ireached the top of the handicap and from that position she had been only narrowly defeated in the ladies’ chief competition and had also been the runner-up in the elec tie competition spread over the season. Such, -improvement forced admiration from all the members and augured well for Miss Neylou’s fu-

ture golf. The trophies were then presented as. follows: — Miss E. Barber: Silver spoon, junior ladies’ ..medal competition. Mrs. Berg in: Silver spoon, senior ladies’ medal competition. Mrs. Moore: Silver spoon, senior ladies’ medal competition. Mrs. Moore: Silver spoon, ladies’ elec'tic competition. Mrs. Moore: Silver cup, ladies’ open competition. At tfic conclusion, cheers were given for the winners and for Mr. and Mrs. Robinson.
