THE CEMETERY FOOTPATH

TO BE LAUD DOWN BY BOROUGH STAFF.

At last night’s Borough (Council meeting the Clerk reported that no tender had been received for the laying down of a, four-foot asphalt path through the cemetery. Cr. Robinson considered ithe '.A>uneil should employ another man and have the work carried out by [lie road foreman and bis staff. The Mayor said the cemetery account ,was in funds and the work would have to be a charge on the cemetery account. Cr. Cowley supported Cr. Robinson’s proposal. Cr. Ross was of the opinion thata four-foot path would not be a success. It would need to be either wider or narrower as monumental masons and other vehicular traffic would Chip a four-foot track to pieces as the wheels would have but four inches clearance. Ruts would also be cut out either side of the path. Traffic would have to be one way also. 'Or. Cowley said vehicles could be made to enter by one gate and go out by the other. ICIr. Thompson said it had been suggested to him that a lawn mower would possibly solve the problem. If the sexton was paid to mow a path this might serve the purpose. Councillors, however, considered tlie cost of such a scheme would be prohibitive. Crs. Roore and Crowe supported Cr. Ross’s contention. The Clerk said that if those carting metal or driving heavy lorries in the cemetery had to pay a (ieposit of £1 before obtaining the key to. the cemetery in order to insure the Council against damage to the path, the proposal should be quite all right. On the motion of Crs. Barron and Cowley it was decided to have the work carried out by the .road foreman and an extra hand be engaged for the purpose and that a deposit of £1 be paid by anyone desirous of taking a vehicle into the cemetery as security against damage to the path.
