LEVEL CROSSING FATALITY.

DEATH OF VETERAN JOUR--NALIST.

Napier, Last Night

Mr. F. T. ißedman, a member of the literary staff of the Hawke’s Bay Herald, was fatally injured when he was knocked down by a train at the Hastings street crossing, Napier, at about six o’clock to-night. Deceased had lost the sight of one eye and apparently did not notice the train approaching diagonally across his path from the rear, and he succumbed before arrival of the ambulance at the hospital.

Deceased, who was a Justice of the Peace, came to Napier about four years ago, following bis selling out d a newspaper enterprise in Taranaki and long residence in the Wnirarapn. He was 77 years of age and leaves a widow and air adult family of three. The late Mr. F. T. Redman was a brother-in-law of Mr. J. K. Hornblow, of Foxton, with whom lie was in partnership as proprietors of the Eketaliuna Express some years ago. Deceased, prior to following a newspaper career, was clerk to the Masterton Borough CounciP and later held responsible positions with legal and commercial, firms. secretary of the first close settlement association in the Pnliialun district. His literary contributions were of distinctive merit, the result of his studious habits. He possessed a deeply spiritual nature and a. love for his fellow-man and those privileged to know ( Fred. Redman knew him for what he was: A (Christian gentleman and the soul of honour. We'mourn the loss of a life-long friend.

The two sons of deceased are Messrs 0. F. Redman, of the literary 'staff of our Levin contemporary, T. Redman, dentist of Dunedin, and Airs. F. Hodge wife of the sub-editor of the ..Hawke’s Bay Herald.
