FIRE AT SHANNON

TWiO SHOPS GUTTED

An alarm of fire was given in Shannon at 3.45 yesterday morning, when the two shops with dwelling of three rooms attached in Ballance Street, owned by Mrs. McPherson, were badly gutted.

The premises were occupied by * Miss Scorrar and Mr. Puckey, who arrived from Auckland on Wednesday and had rented the building .with the intention of carrying on a business iof dressmaking, home cookingj supper rooms, etc. The building had been occupied by Mr. Puckey since Wednesday but on Tuesday he went- to Palmerston N. by train to transact business, Miss Scorrar remaining at the shop. She refilled about 11 p.m. and' at 3.30 a.m. was awakened by a noise and found the back portion of the building- to be on fire. She immediately called Constable Blaikie, who resides nearby and the Fire Brigade jduly arrived, hut the fire had such a strong hold that the building was quickly gutted. Miss Scorrar, it is stated, is a heavy loser, new furniture having arrived yesterday from Auckland. Her personal effects are said to be insured in an Auckland office. The building was eovelred_ in the State office, but the amount is not available.
