MAORI GIRLS.
EMPLOYMENT BY CHINESE,
INQUIRY BEING HELD,
Auckland, Sept. 6
In response to numerous requests by members of the Maori race, backed up by considerable public opinion, the Government has appointed a committee to investigate the employment of Maori girls by Chinese in Auckland and the surrounding districts. The committee, the members of which are Dr. T. J. Hughes, Medical Officer of Health at Auckland, chairman; Messrs W. Slaughter, representing the Labour Department, and Tukere To Anga, representing the Native Department, will hear preliminary evidence at ttffi offices of the Health Department to-day. The sittings will be continued to-morrow and .on Saturday. An almost entire absence of publicity has marked the setting up of the committee. The matter was considered by Cabinet, and it was stated that an inquiry would be held, but very short notice was given of the personnel of the committee and the order of reference.
The inquiry will not be open to the Press.
