The game in the competition for the above Cup between Shannon and Wanderers, set down to be played at Shannon on Saturday, did not eventuate, owing to neither Club being able to raise a team. Seeing this is only the first round for the trophy, the prospects for an interesting competition do not look too bright.

INTER-SCHOOLS MATCH,
HOROWHENUA v. BUTT VALLE Y Jjw. "MR Friday last the Horowhenua Primary Schools reps, journeyed to Petone for the purpose of playing the Hutt Valley team. On their arrival the visitors were billeted and entertained by Hutt at the Grand theatre on Friday night. During Saturday morning the arrangements for the team to visit General Motors were realised and the boys having seen everything, were very reluctant to leave the workshops.
The teams met on Petone oval at 1.30 in the afternoon and resultant heavy trains which had not ceased altogether then, the ground was very greasy and not conducive to the exhibition of the best points of either team. Horowhenua won the toss and played down field with the sun, and a forward game followed. After ten minutes battling the ball went to Bell, the Hutt wing-three-quarter 1 , who managed to cross the yellow line. The kick was converted —Hutt s—Horowhenua5 —Horowhenua nil.
During the remainder of the first half the forwards on both sides monopolised the play, McEwan (Horowhenua), being very unlucky twice, once with a dribbling rush — the ball going out; and on the second occasion being forced out. Towards the end of this spell from a cross kick Bell again came to light and added another 3 points for Hutt.
The second half was anybody’s game, the play moving ‘from one half to the other with unexpected speed. Mclntyre, a Hutt forward, proved a very dangerous man with exceeding skill at dribbling, skill, that was equally matched when on occasions he met the yellow fullback, Nicholson, who by his defensive work -saved his team several times. During this half the yellow backs made several attempts at passing rushes but a greasy ball prevented decisive movements. The game closed with the play in midfield and with Hutt as victors by 8 to nil.
The closing event of the trip, a dinner held at the Petone Central School, was opened with the singing of the National Anthem. At the close of the refreshments, Mr. J. Burns (chairman), welcomed .the visiting team and expressed the virtues of inter-union games, stat-
ing this as being the first oecasion upon which Hutt as a primary school union, had had the pleasure of meeting Horowhenua, and hoped that in the future the teams would be able to travel still further afield in the furtherance of rugby, and that some of those he faced, would attain to the same standard in their senior games, that they had attained to in their primary schools. Closing, he called upon Mjr. McKenzie, the Mayor of Petone, who drew the boys’ attention to the work the teachers nowadays voluntarily took upon themselves in comparison with the teachers of his day and asked those present not to forget the duty which they owed. Mr. Melody, a very keen enthusiast in the activities in the Valley, in expressing his appreciation of the match said that if the boys playing now, carried their experience back to their comrades, and if all endeavoured in later years to play the game in the spirit in which the game had been played that day, he was sure that the standard of football in New Zealand would certainly be raised. He further added iu regard to the game that in his opinion had it been a dry day, there was certainly every hope of the score being reversed.
On behalf of Horowhenua, Mr 11. Jones (manager) thanked those responsible for the enjoyable time afforded by them and called upon llie visitors to show their appreciation of he girls who had so ably added to the success of the visit. The function was closed by Mr. If. Miller who, on behalf of all present thanked the girls for their efforts and called upon the Hutt hoys for cheers for their visitors.
Canterbury defeated Southland at Christchurch on Saturday by 21 points to 3. At Dannevirke on Saturday, the home team defeated Bush by 24 to 11.
At New Plymouth on Saturday, Wanganui* representatives defeated Taranaki by 28 to 9. The game was played in brilliant sunshine and on a dry ground but was a poor exhibition. Wanganui played a fair game but Taranaki was stale and lifeless and obviously far below form. Ball scored four tries for Wanganui and Tilly kicked a magnificent penalty goal from beyond half way. The annual tourney between Wellington, Christ’s, Wanganui Collegiate and Nelson Colleges commenced at Wellington on Saturday. Wanganui drew with Nelson, nine points all, Nelson equalising in the last minute. Wellington achieved a narrow victory over Christ’s College, by 8 points to G. Yesterday Wellington defeated Nelson by G points to 3.
