RAILWAY CHARGES.

DEPARTMENT UNABLE TO ACCEDE TO COUNCIL’S REQUEST. At Monday night’s meeting of the Foxton Borough iCbuncil the Railway Department wrote re the Borough Council’s letter, conveying the resolution of the Council that railway freight charges be based on the railway mileage to Levin, plus the mileage by the direct road route from Levin to Foxton, and vice versa, informing them that the proposal of the Council in this connection had been very carefully considered but as the introduction of such a principle into their rating system would have such farreaching effects, resulting in a very serious loss of revenue, which they were at present quite unable to bear, they regretted their inability to meet the wishes of the Council in the matter indicated by the resolution. The letter'was received.
