FLOODING OF THE WHIROKINO HIGHWAY.
The condition of the Alain Highway between the AVhirokino bridge and Foxton was under consideration at the meeting of the Levin Chamber of Commerce last Friday evening, when a copy was received from the Foxton Chamber of the letter forwarded by that body to the Highways Board, suggesting that, in ordelr to protect the portion of highway from the bridge to a proposed deviation near the Government drain, the road should be raised thiree feet over a distance of half a mile. The Levin Chamber was asked to support the Foxton body’s representation to the Board. The retiring President (Air. Keedwell) said that the question was one for the Highways Board, and he presumed that the Board would have an inspection made in the locality. Air. ICi’isp remarked that the Board’s chairman, Air. F. W. Furtkiert, had visited the area lately. M]r. Aitken was inclined to think that the Board would not he likely to spend a. lot of money in the place mentioned, knowing that it was subject to frequent flooding.
Afr. Keedwell said that for a long time there had been suggestions for a deviation at AA r 'hirokino, and he thought that this was 'the reason why that section of iroad had not been bitumenised. Air. Crisp asked if the Board was likely to erect another bridge. Air. Keedwell: That has been suggested. Air. J. A. Smith: No matter where they put the bridge, you. would have to go through water. Air. Keedwell said that this Chamber could assist Foxton bv ■making representations to the Board. The matter affected Levin, because the flooding stopped traffic between the two towns.
On the motion of (Air. Kerslake, seconded by Air. Aitken, it was decided to communicate with the Highways Board in support of the Foxton Chamber’s request.
Air. Goldsmith remarked that the Shannon-Foxton road had proved very convenient when the floods blocked the Levin-Foxton route. There had often been letters in the Press criticising the local authorities and the Highways Board because they bad not pushed on with the Levin-'Foxton road; but it was certainly a good tiling to have the other road as well.
Mr. Keedwell: The notice board at this end has declar ed the Fox ton road closed weeks after it lias been opened. Mr. Iverslake stated that this anomaly was being taken in band by Poxton with a view to remedying it.
