IS FOXTON RAILWAY DOOMED

SENSATIONAL RUMOUR, MENTIONED AT LEVIN MEETING.

PREFERENTIAL FREIGHTS STILL A BURNING QUESTION. A letter was received by the Levin Chamber of Commerce at its meeting last Friday evening from the Foxton Harbour Board, stating that it would hold a meeting’ in Palmerston North on the first Monday in September, when it would be pleased to meet representatives of the Chambers operating in its district to discuss the question of preferential railway 'ta(riffs operating in favour of AVanganui as against the port of Foxton (says the Chronicle). Mr. Kerslalke: They are now relying on the fact that, when the Palmarston-Foxton road is bitumenised, the railway will have to compete with the lorries, and that will reduce the railway rates. Mr. Goldsmith: There is another way. They might have pulled u.p the (rails. Mr. Keedwell: I have heard that there have been railway experts over that way, overlooking the thing with that idea. Mr. Kerslake said it looked as if thdre was going to be a good deal of activity at the port. Three boats would be trading, and a good deal of cargo was coming from the South Island. Mr. (Crisp remarked that there were a good many bullocks being shipped from Foxton. Mr. Keedwell said he did not know that this Chamber was vitally concerned in the matter. Mr. Crisp concurred in this view, and said that the Chamber had not promised to send a delegate to discuss the question. Mr. Kerslake suggested that the Mayor (Mr. Blenlkhorn), who is the Levin Borough’s representative on the Foxton Harbour Board, he asked also to represent the Chamber at the Boaird’s next meeting. Mr. Crisp: Ask him to give our moral support to the request. ' The meeting agreed to ask the Mayor to act for the Chamber.
