POUNDS WASTED!
OR, ROBINSON’S OPINION OF BOROUGH LIGHTING SCHEME. Street lighting again came up for a good deal of discussion at last night’s (Borough Council meeting. A letter was received from the (Chamber of Commerce suggesting that the Triangle light be shifted further north to properly light up the entrance to Park Street and in
addition to this the Mayor reported that an informal meeting of the Works Committee had agreed to shift the light between Frances and Pnrc-ell Streets to the corner of Frances Street.
Cr. Cowley considered the light at the end of Park and Victoria Streets at the corner of the Park, was useless and should he shifted. Cr. Robinson: It annoys me sometimes! j Ci’. Barron suggested that Cr. Cowley was speaking on behalf of the youth of the town. (Laughter). Cr. Robinson considered Whyte Street the worst lit street in the borough, and suggested that the Councillors should take a walk around at night and inspect the lighting. Pounds had been wasted in connection with street lighting in the boa’ough, owing to the fact that the lights had been erected during the day time without consideration to night. Cr.lßobinson also suggested that the Railway Department be requested to erect a lamp over the cattle-yards at the wharf to make night handling of stoejk safe.
It was decided that the street lamp in Johnston St. between Frances St. and Purcell St. be shifted to the south corner of Frances St. and that the light in Johnston St. at the corner of Whyte St. be moved facing the entrance of Wiliyte Street. It was decided to alter the Triangle lamp as requested and to recommend the Railway Department to erect an electric light to illuminate the cattle yards when cattle are being trucked.
