BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: — From the Highways Board, re appointment of traffic inspectors.— Received. From the Kairanga County Council, notifying the Council that its share of heavy traffic fees amounted to £SO 15/2. —'Received. From the Horowhenna County Council, stating that they had no further information as to the disposal of the proceeds from the sale of the old iShannon Bridge, other than that the Public Works Department had the matter in hand. —Received. From the Valuer General, advising that the preliminary work of preparing plans and field: hoo(ks had been done, and that these had now been supplied to the District Valuer to enable him to make a start on the work of revising’ the valuations in the roll for Foxton Borough. —Received. From Mr. G. H. Stiles, of Palmerston North, in reference to the •payun’ent of (rates on his Foxton property and also making application for a revaluation of the sections.—Owing to the fact that the whole borough is shortly to undergo a revaluation the Valuer General also wrote notifying that it was hot possible for him to make a separate revaluation in this case. — It was decided to ask Mr. 'Stiles to pay rates on his own valuation pending the decision of the Assessment Court. From the Railway Department, asking that care be taken that stock not be allowed into the Department's reserve on the FoxtonMotuiti road when access is being made to the .rubbish depot, as trees

are to he planted in the reserve at an early date. —'The Clerk reported that locks had been placed on the gates. GENERAL. A grant of £4 4/- was made to the Foxton District High School. The matter of purchasing a lorry for borough work was held over until next meeting. The Mayor’s action in arranging with the Justice Department for the upkeep of the front of the new courthouse provided the old picket fence was removed to the rear of the building was endorsed. The Railway Department was granted permission to connect up a water trough in the cattle yards with the town supply at the water trough at the end of "Wharf Street, water to be paid for at 1/- for 1000 gallons. 'Cr. Cowley reported that there were several big holes in Lady’s Mile which required attention. The roadway between the Council’s and Mnnawatu County Council’s road at. the north end of the town was also in a bad condition despite the fact that the road staff had recently covered it with loose metal. He did not think this was the correct procedure. Each hole, in his opinion, should receive proper treatment and the metal blended into it. It was decided to draw the road foreman’s attention to the roads mentioned. WATER AND DRAINAGE. REPORTS The foreman (Mjr. W. Neville) reported that during the month lie lias been engaged in clearing out storm water drain for householder, clearing live house drains, laying one water service, repairing four water meters and general maintenance work, by-laws, etc. During the month 1,305,000 gallons of water was pumped, the maximum current used was 32 amps. —Adopted. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The'gas manager (Mr. W. S. Heyes) reported that during the month four blocked services had been attended to, the rest of the time being taken up in attending to consumers’ requirements and attending to the woiiks generally. — Adopted.
