CONSOLIDATION OF COUNTRY SCHOOLS.
APPROVAL BY LOCAL COMMITTEE.
At last night’s (District High School Committee meeting the chairman (Mr. J. K. Hornblow) referred bo the Government’s pro- • pos-al for country schools consolidation. He said it was the Government’s intention where local opinion is not antagonistic, to close small schools and convey the children to larger schools, the children thus obtaining the advantage of instraction in bet-tea’ equipped schools and froim more highly qualified teachers than would otherwise be the case, besides the advantages of secondary instruction. He cited the Moutoa school as an example, where already a majority of the children from that locality were attending both local schools by taking advantage of the suitable transport facilities. Objection would naturally he raised (by certain of the settlers to the closing of the school, but speaking broadly the educational advantages to the children and the economic saving to the Department outweighed the objection to the closure. Mr. Huntley said he favoured the children attending a- school nearest their home. Other members agreed with the Government’s proposal and it was resolved to endorse the Government’s action and to acquaint the Education -Board accordingly.
