HEMP MARKET.
JULY GRADING 'RETURNS. The grading returns fog hemp, tow, stripper tow, and stripper slips for the month of July have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: —
Twenty-five bales at Auckland, 21 at Wellington, 28 at Foxton, 3 at Pt. Chalmers, and 16 at the Bluff were rejected. The number of bales in each grade was as follows, the number for the eo(rresponding period of last«year being given in parenthesis:—'Good fair 209 (167), high fair 1412 (910), low fair 'BBS (585), common 274 (165), rejected 93 (55), a total of 2873 as against 1882 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 991 bales.
The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 917, Wellington 1067, Foxton 338, Picton 34, Dunedin 27, Pt. Chalmers 28, Bluff 456, Lyttelton 6.. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded: —
at Wellington were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Ist grade 115 (63), 2nd grade 461 (237), 3rd grade 195 (125), condemned 29 (18„ a total of 800 bales as against 443 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 357 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 345, Wellington 254, Foxton 62, Pieton 16, Bluff 121, Lyttelton 2. Stripper Tow: —'Forty-four bales at Wellington were graded 2nd grade. An increase of 44 bales against nil last year. Stiripper Slips:—Forty-two bales at the Bluff were graded 3rd grade. Sixteen bales were condemned. The total number graded was 58 bales as against 40 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 18 bales.
HIGH COMMLS'SIONER’S CABLE. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated 3trd instant, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Hemp.—'Manila market dull and values about unchanged. “J” grade for August-Oetober shipment £3B to £3B 5/-. Sisal. —Shows improvement and good niaife sold No. 1 up to £4l 10/- but quieter at the close. Sep-tember-INoveniber and October-De-cember shipments sold £4l; No. 2 good marks £39 to £39 10/- value. New' Zealand. — More interest shown but very little offered. Closing values July-August shipment, high points £33 10/-, fair £3l. Tow 2nd grade £2l 10/-, 3rd grade £l7 10/-.
