UNIVERSAL HALF-HOLIDAY.
TO BE DISIOUSSED BY PARLIAMENT. Parliament is to have its promised opportunity of debating the question whether Saturday should he the universal half-holiday in New Zealand. During the recess the Prime Minister gave a deputation an undertaking that such an opportunity would he afforded. It was anticipated that a Government Bill on the subject, might appear, but the form was disclosed yesterday when the Minister of Labour (Hon. W. A. Veifch) gave notice to move the following resolution: — “In the opinion of this House provision should be made for the general observance on Saturday of the statutory closing day for shops and the weekly half-holiday of shop assistants.” A time has yet to be fixed for the discussion of the motion, and it is probable that the Government’s legislative intentions in the matter -will be influenced by the result of that expression of opinion by the House.
