THE BOROUGH OF FOXTON.
SOME INTERESTING STATISTICS. There are 657 rateable properties in the borough of Foxton belonging to 420 ratepayers. The number of dAvellings in Foxton total 410. There are nine miles of tarsealed roads and six 'miles of gravel roads Avithin the borough and two miles formed but not paved or surfaced. There is also a mile of unformed road. The particulars of the rates levied during last year Avere as folloavs: —General rate 4 11-64 d, Special Rate 7 23-32 d, Water Rate 6 per cent, annual value, Libi’ary Rate l-8d and a Hospital and Chaiitable Aid Rate of 31-64th of a penny.
During the past year total receipts received by the Borough Council amounted to £14037 1/8, arid were made up as follows: — Subsidy on rates £lB7 10/-, Taxation £5378 3/4, Licenses under the Licensing Act £172, other licenses and permits £279 16/8, Rents £379 9/2, Fines £3 7/-, 'Sale of material, land and stock £260 15/5, Sale of gas £2131 8/-, Library, Toaati Hall and Baths £2631 15/8, Interest on ■Deposits, etc. £lO6 9/7, receipts from loans £BSO, Special grants from Government (Highways Board) £326 11/9, Petrol tax £lO 11/8, reimbursements of amounts paid £474 13/-, Heavy Traffic fees received on behalf of other local bodies £325 1/10, cash in hand at fhe beginning of the year (Bank) £457 13/10, overdraft at Bank at end of year £6l 14/9.
The payments totalled £13263 2/3 and were made up as follows: — Management £447 10/-, Tra%’elling expenses £5 2/-, Rent and office expenses £93 14/9, Printing, advertising and stationery £44 19/11, Collection of rates, etc. £ll2 17/-, Insurances £2l 9/7, Legal expenses £4l 18/-, Hospital and Charitable Aid £228 14/10, Streets and footpaths £1385 6/8, Bridges £BSO, Drainage and Sewerage £136 9/4, Water supply £5lB 18/-, Fire Pre \'on t ion £235 2/6, GasAvorks £1939 11/3, Street Lighting £2Ol 10/-, Cemetery and Morgue £B7 2/9, Pound, etc. £29 13/4, Workers’ dwellings £6 9/2, Library, Toavii Hall, etc. £2175 17/5, Reserves £2OO 3/11, Baths £95 6/10, Subscriptions and grants £l2 8/6, Interest on Loans £3285 13/2, Interest on Overdraft £6 0/9, Repayment of Debentures £530 7/10. Amounts paid to Sinking Fund £260, Heavy Traffic Fees paid into pool £3lO 14/9. The overdraft at the Bank at the beginning of the yealr was £336 16/7 and cash at the Bank £437 2/10. The Borough’s total estimated assets are £55584 12/3 with cash assets £4085 5/-, a total of £59669 17/3. The Borough’s total indebtedness at the end of last financial year was £55911 1/2. The Borough has raised nine loans AA’hieh are as folloAvs: — GasAvoi’ks £IIOOO, raised in Sydney and 'maturing in 1931. The rate is at 4A pefr cent, and the amount of accrued Sinking Fund on 31st March, 1929, was £6331 4/1. Town Hall:—£24oo raised in Ncav Zealand and maturing in 1932. The rate of interest is 4$ and the a'mount of accrued Sinking Fund as at March 31st, 1929, A\ T as £719 11/2. Antecedent Liability:—£lo9l raided in Ncav Zealand at 6 pea 1 cent., maturing 1929. Drainage Construction: —-£600 raised in Ncav Zealand ait 5i per cent., maturing 1930; Drainage Construction No. 2: — £IOOO raised in New Zealand at 6 per cent., maturing 1931. ‘ Roads and Streets: —£5000, raised in NeAV Zealand at 6 per cent., maturing 1933. Town Hall: —£6000, raised in NeAV Zealand at 6 per cent., maturing 1933. Workers’ DAvelling:—£Boo raised in New Zealand at 6 per cent., maturing 1937. 'Shannon Bridge:—£Bso, raised in NeAV Zealand at 6 per cent., maturing 1936. During last year, licenses Avere issued and fees collected as follows :
Auctioneers, 1; £lO. Motor drivers, 200; £6O 17/-. Heavy Traffic fees, 12; £l2O 7/2. Vehicles and drivers, other than motor, 10; £l7. Building permits issued, 11; £7 ]O/- collected. Dangerous goods permits, 8; £2l. Dog Registration, 98; £27 10/-. Sundry licenses, 19; £l4 12/6, a total of 359 permits being issued bringing in a revenue of £278 16/8 bo the Borough. 'The albove statistics were read to Councillors at last night’s Borough Council meeting when the Mayor remarked that Foxton was not a bad little town. It had practically all the conveniences of any up-to-date town and taking that into consideration the public debt was not particularly heavy.
