UNUSUAL PROCEDURE
YOUTH ENTERTAINS CROWD AT FIRE. Unexpected humour was furnished to a crowd who gathered at a fire in Raffles Street, Napietr, last Friday afternoon. The blaze was at the back of the house, and presently a boy, aged about 11 years —evidently the son of the house — strolled on to the verandah, and leaned unconcernedly .against, a post, his jaws working rhythmically, as he gazed ant upon the crowd with a mingled air of patronage, pride and nonchalance, as much as to say: “This is our fire, and we don’t have one every day, just make the most of it.” Presently lie disappeared inside, then reappeared with a. small table, which he set down on the verandah. Next he staggered out with a gramophone, and, to the amusement of the crowd, put on -a. record in spite of the fact that the fire engine drowned the music completely. Another /diversion was created by a .small boy pushing vigorously through the dense crowd. “Stand hack there!” cried ! a policeman. “But please sir, I have to delivejr a paper to that house,” was the answer. The whole town might be aflame, but “Business as usual” is evidently this youth’s motto. So lie was permitted to throw the paper on Hie lawn, whence it was retrieved by the boy on the verandah who, having conformed to the laws of hospitality to the crowd, as fag as he was able, now proceeded to open up the paper and intently scan the news, and while the gramophone played vainly, the crowd laughed, and the. house burned.
