THE ABAW|AS AND THE GERMANS. Rotorua, July 2. An interesting ceremony took place yesterday afternoon, when the Arawas met- Captain von Ari auld and officers of the Emden at the Grand Hotel. A casket containing the flag flown by the Arawas during Hie .war, depicting a Maori warrior defying a German, was looked in the presence of Captain von Arnaukl and the Arawa c-hiefs. One kev was given to Captain von Arnanld and the other to the paramount chief. The casket will be taken io the Maori Church and there kept symbolising that all hostile feeling between Maori and German was ended. Many returned soldiers were present.' iCaptnin von Arnanld, deeply moved, spoke in terms of the deepest feeling and gratitude. The close of the proceedings was celebrated in the usual manner, and the utmost Cordiality prevailed. Auckland, July 2. The cruiser. Emden leaves for Wellington at fi o’clock on Thursday night. “'Since we have been here,’-’ said Captain-von Arnanld, '“we have been greatly impressed with the hospitality .extended to our officers and (men. It has helped my mission considerably.' Wje could not possibly have been better received. '•As far-as Rotorua is concerned, we had a most interesting time. The welcome extended to us on our arrival and the cordial way we were treated all the time we were at Rotorua. was most pleasing. We had just as enthusiastic a farewell as our reception. I met a gentleman who came fifteen miles to see me who had been on a vessel convoyed by TOES. Sydney, and who saw the old Emden before she was sunk.”. A luncheon will be held on hoard the Elrnden on Thursday, to which the oomlmander has invited the Mayor, the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, and many other prominent citizens.
