MOTOR ACCIDENT IN MAIN STREET.

YOUNG MAN’S NARROW ESCAPE. • Mr. Harry Huff, a well-known local young man, had a very miraculous escape from being killed in Main Street at 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon. He was sitting astride his bicycle which was pulled into the gutter in front of the billiatrd room when a car driven by Mrs. G. Coley junr., pulled in towards the (kerb in front of Walls’ shop. The ear was practically at a standstill, the brake being held down by Mrs. Coley, when ’her foot slipped and the ear jumped fonvard and charged down on Huff. There were two other bicycles parked against the keifb in front of the billiard room and these the ear caught and dragged along. Huff seeing the car approaching, attempted to push his bike into the iroad but the car caught him and knocked him down in front of the radiator between the front wheels. Continuing on, the ear struck a “Baby Austin” also parked in the kc-lrb in front of Mr. Mattar’s shop and swerved out into the road in front of Wfhyte’s'~Ho-

tel, where- it was brought to a standstill with Huff still underneath and with his head almost, under one of the wheels. Had the ear proceeded another foot or so he must have been 'killed outright. A crowd soon gathered and Huff was released from his position under the car where he was all doubled up, badly shaken and with many superficial cuts and abrasions. The three bikes weire still jambed under the ear, all badly smashed. The “Baby Austin,” which belonged to Mr. G. Rough, and which was fortunately unoccupied at the time, was in the gutter alongside with one front and one rear wheel smashed. Huff was conveyed to the doctor’s where an examination showed that he had fortunately escaped serious injury but he was badly shaken and bruised. The cause of the accident was due to the fact that Mrs. Coley is not accustomed to driving a geared ear, having purchased a geared vehicle only a few days ago. Mrs. Coley, 'however, stuck to the wheel, and ultimately managed to bring the car to a standstill. From inquiries made this morning, we were informed that Huff is progressing well and hopes to be about again in a day or so.
