MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL
RATE COLLECTOR'S REPORT. The County rate collector reported at Monday's meeting that the rates struck for the past year totalled £17,789 3s lid of which £IO,BBO 18s 4d had been collected, leaving £063 15s 7d outstanding. Of £2546 5s arrears on account of previous years £1287 Is lOd was collected during the year, leaving outstanding £1258 14s 2d. “I anticipate that practically the whole of the European rates for 1929 will be collected during the current year. The arrears for years 1923-28 include about £250 for general rates owing by Native occupiers. Of the balance I estimate that £2OO of the general rates will be collected. I propose during the current year to try and get soime of the Native rates collected, and with this in view I would like authority to place the amount in the hands of a special collector. “The question of rates on sections occupied bv returned soldiers is fairly satisfactory, most of the settlers au - e meeting their obligations fairly well, but there are still a few who do not seem, to realise their responsibility. “There have been no rates unitten off for some years past, and in addition to the amounts shown above, there are arrears on the books for the years 1920, 1921 and 1922, totalling £I3OO which I would suggest be written off by resolution of the council. The amounts are principally due on sections formerly occupied by returned soldiers and reverted to the (Crown. The Department of Lands has definitely stated it will recognise no claim.” The report was adopted.
