MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL HIGHWAYS.
ENGINEER’S REPORT. The County engineer (Mr. H. V. Bond), reported as follows on the road work in the County at Monday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council. Himatangi-Foxton: The formation metalling and rolling of this five miles of road has been completed with the exception of a little draining. There is also soime faseining and tidying up to do. A small gang will ibe left behind to carry out this work, while the major portion of the gang has already been transferred to the Himatangi-Ran-giotu road. 'The roller will be engaged in rolling river-bed Irnetal into the surface throughout the winter. Corners have been cut back and the whole inter-section at Sorenson’s corner has been framed up and metalled and joined up with the work on the Rangiotu road. This work will cost a little under the estimate.
Hmiatangi-Rangiotu: A total distance of 2 miles, 50 chains has been formed, metalled and rolled. Some heavy fillings have been made and the new road will be a great dmprovelment when coknpleted. With the two construction gangs now working on this length the work will he progressing at a. good pace. The metal supplies have been maintained and we now have a fair stock piled on road for contingencies. T'he formation of the Bainesse deviation is almost .complete and will he metalled during the coming month. The .camps are 'lu good order and are being run satisfactorily. Terrace End Pit: The output of 208 cubic yards per day has been maintained. A fair amount of alteration work to the sidings has had to he put in hand to ensure an adequate quantity of metal to complete the construction work*. Himatangi-Sanson: Plans for eight miles of this road are complete and will be forwarded to the Main Highways board in the course of the next few days for approval Plans for the remaining six miles will be proceeded with immediately. Maintenance: The graders have been at work on all the Main Highways. The northern end of the Himatangi-'Sanson road has been patched and a. culvert had to be replaced with concrete pipes at Oroua Downs. Drains have been cleaned out. The metalling contract for the Awahuri-Feilding road has been completed. Drains and culverts have been cleaned out. The contract for metalling Stewart’s line is in progress. Drains and culverts have been cleaned out on the SansonBulls road. Clay and metal is being .spread on the Tangimoana highway by contract, and drains and culverts have been cleaned out. The portion of the Himatangi-Rangiotu highway not yet under construction is being patched. The metalling contract for the Rongotea-Loug-burn highway has been commenced. Flood depth indicators are to be elected on the Whirokino road. The metalling contract is in, pi'ogress on the Shannon road. The steel from the old Shannon bridge is being carted to Sanson and the timber to Foxton. The punt has been dismantled and the winches, engine, ropes and other gear has been brought to Sanson. Awahou: Sanding lias been carried out and drains cleaned on Kari Karl road. Drains have been cleaned out. on Bowe’s road. The metalling of roads in this riding will be undertaken as soon as possible. Poplar Mill road has been graded. —Received.
