FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the FoxUrn Chamber of Commerce was held in Ross’s Rooirfs last evening, presided over by Mr. J. K. Hornblow (President). Also present were Messrs John Ross, R. N. Speirs, J. M. Thomson, I. 'Corn, W. E. Bullard, D. R. Barron, D. Christie, C. M. Hewett, M. E. Perreau, and H. Osborne. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Aitchison and A. E. Sc’ott. REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET. The President’s annual report (as previously published in these columns) was read and adopted. The balance-sheet, which disclosed a small credit balance was also read and adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted in 'the re- election of all those at present in office, i.e. President: Mr. J. K. Hornblow; vice-presi-dent: Mr. D. Christie; treasurer: Mr .7. Ross; auditor: Mr. S. H. Poole, and secretary, Mr. R. 0. Hornblow. A vote of thanks was accorded the auditor for his services. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows : From the Fox ton Harbour Board, asking the Chamber’s support in having representations made to the Highways -Board that the Beach Road be tar-sealcd immediately. — Decided to heartily support the request and to seek the co-operation of the Wanganui, Manawatu and Wellington Automobile Clubs in the matter.
Ftroim -same, •pointing out the unfairness to Foxton of the preferen - tial freights which the Railway Department at -present lvas in force and asking the 'Chamber to be represented on a deputation to the Minister for Railways to have Foxbill placed on the same footing as Wanganui with regard to sea borne freights.—Decided to heartily support the Board in its request. From the Marion Chamber acknowledging receipt of the local Ch'nmbePs letter sujggesting that they again take up the ton Railway deviation stating that saline would he discussed by the Marion Chamber at its next meeting.—Received. From, 'the New Zealand Manager l'or iCladbnrys and Frys (N.Z.) Ltd., acknowledging receipt of the Chamber’s invitation that lie visit Foxton for the purpose of inspecting and considering the natural facilities offered for the establishment of a chocolate factory -locally stating that the invitation will he remembered. when the factory site is under i close 'Consideration. —Received.
From the Prime Minister acknowledging refeeipt of 'the .Chamber’s communication suggesting that, any bicirease in taxation should he derived from the imposition of taxation on imports from the IT.'S.A. and foreign countries, stating -that 'the representatdns Im'ade by the Chamber will he borne in mind in the event of the Government dealing •with am- taxation proposals during the next session of Parliament. —Received. The Prime Minister also wrote in sns'wer to the Chamber’s letter suggesting that, the -time -was now opportune for the consideration of the Levin-Marton railway deviation, stating that the matter would he placed before the Minister for Public Works. —Received. NEW MEMBER. Mr. G. V. Fraser was elected a now member of the Chamber. GENERAL. It rwa,s decided to forward a letter of appreciation to the managers of the Presbyterian Church for the gratis use of the schoolroom for meetings during the past year. It was decided that the Chamber meet on the last Thursday in every month. It was decided to forward a letler of appreciation to the Mananatu (County Council of the courtesy and consideration- extended to the travelling public by the men employed on the Him'atangi Highnay during the course of the construction work.
