J U'NIOR COMPETITION. FOX TON DEFEAT WANDERERS. The second round oif the Junior (Northern) cam-petition was commenced on Saturday last when Levin Wanderers and Foxton met on Easton Park in the presence of a. good crowd of onlookers. The Wiandereft’s fielded a much heavier and improved team, the locals being all out to win by a narrow margin 11 points (three tries, one converted) to 5 (one converted try). The game opened fast, the black foi'wairds becoming immediately aggressive. The yellows were relv'ing on their backs and within live minutes had set their dashing winger, Croon, off for a good try in good position. Huff made no mistake with an easy kick. Both tealms then ,-ettled down to a ding-dong battle for the rest of the spell the ball travelling from one end of the field to the other. As the result of a forward rush a black forwaird crossed the line but lost possession of ihe ball. Half time came with the .-..cores still remaining Foxton 5 \Vanderers nil.
The second spell was another dour 45 minutes with both full hacks, espeeiallv Stevenson, Foxton’s defender, showing Splendid defensive work.
From a clearly hooked ball Hartley set his backs in action, (Croon finishing a good piece of play with a try wide out. Huff missed the kick. The next incident of note was a determined run by Rankin who crossed for what appeared to he a good try. The referee, however, was not in a position to see the touch down and rightly ruled a 5yards scrum. However, from the .nick at the break up of the scrum Taylor grabbed the leather and planted it over. This try was not converted.
Shortly after resuming Williams who was playing a dashing game put in a dazzling run unfortunately slipping when he had the black hacks all beaten. The blacks then lashed play to the other end and from a good passing rush their wing- three quarter scored a good Ivy. Winiata added the points— Foxton 11 —Wanderers 5.
The' game ended- shortly afterwards with the ‘scores unaltered. Mr. Neville handled the whistle in I'is usual capable manner. This game was the hardest contested by the Foxton Juniors this season they having great difficulty m fielding a team owing to sickness among members.
A pleasing feature of the day "’as the fine play of E. Stevenson, who was 'making his first appearance. His defence was ■ impregnable.
