ACCESS TO THE BEACH

SANATORIUM ROAD DISCUSSED Considerable discussion ensued at yesterday’s meeting of the Foxten Harbour Board as to the putting in order of the ‘Sanatorium road at ManaAvatu Heads to give a good and safe access to the Beach. The discussion arose out of the reading of a request from Messrs Adam Burgess, of Palmerston N., that the Board should put the Sanatorium Road in order as its present state Avas a menace to motorcar owners who had sections in the Sanatorium.

Mi-. R. Bryant: It would do them good to put in an hour’s Avork on the road themselves filling up some of the holes. They could do the lot in half an hour.

Mr. Perreau zvas inclined to think that the matter called for serious consideration on the part of the Board. Quite a number of section holders Avere affected and in bis opinion the local committee should report on the matter. Mr. W. E. Barber said that a local loan might be necessary to have the road put in good order. The Chairman (Mr. J. Linkla ter) : Will the ManaAvatu County Council take the road over and administer it after it is put in ordeji-.

Mr. Baliber said the County Council could not take the road over but they would administer it if: put in order. Mr. R. Edwards said the matter was a very important one. The road should be attended to at once. Noav that they had the sympathy of the chairman of the Manawatu County Council they should build up the road and asphalt it and to malice representations that the road from Foxton to the Beach should be tar-sealed by the Main Highways Board without delay. The beach was one of the ‘finest in Now Zealand and Avonld serve an immense population once the roads were put in order. In its present condition people stayed away rather than travel over the road. He hoped the Manawatu County Council would see the necessity for having the bench road attended to without delay and the Boaji’d should use all its influence to have this matter put under Avay. Mr. Barber explained that the road to the Beach had already been declared a subsidiary highway but ir had to be remembered that the main roads had to be attended to first. The County Council had not overlooked the (Foxton-Beach road and would have it put in order as soon as possible. Their engineer (Mr. IL Bond) had already inspected the iroad Avith a A'iew to Avidening and shouldering it in order that a good level gravel road could be laid down until sealing Avork could be commenced. The Beach Road had proved a very cumbersome-Jjmr-den on the Council in the past and one that lie had done all in his power to assist despite the fact that it was not a settlers road. The Board could rest assured that the Council would push the Avork on with all speed when the main highways had been completed. On the suggestion of Mr. A. Kelloav it was decided to refer the (matter to the various Chambers of Commerce with a view to obtaining their co-operation ,in having - the urgency of this matter represented to the Main Highways BoaJrd and to write the Manawatu County Council asking that the tar sealing of the Foxton-Beach road be carried out as expeditiously as possible.
