ATTEMPT TO BLOW UP RIVER STEAMER.

Wanganui, Last Night. A box, containing five pounds of gelignite, with the necessary cap and fuse, was placed in the engineroojm of the Wanganui river service steamer IWakapai as she lay at Pipiriki wharf last night. The fuse was lit but went out after it had burned to within a few inches of the cap. Access was gained to the engineroom by breaking a window. The packet of gelignite was placed adjacent to the engine. The cap was attached and a length of fuse joined and run out to shore. Evidently the culprit- took the end of the fuse ashore, then cut the headline, with the result that the steamer swung out into, the stream. Then the fuse was ignited, but the plan miscarried. The police have been asked to investigate.
