SENIOR GAME. FOXTON (16) v. SHANNON (3). Before a good crowd of spectators on Easton Park on Saturday afternoon, Foxton seniors met and defeated Shannon after a stubbornly fought game iby 16 points (two converted and two unconverted tries) to 3 points (a try). Foxton seniors somewhat indifferent play last year caused by defections and a difficulty in keeping a full team together, has been obviated this year. Several juniors have been sent up and are showing great form. Particular mention must be made of Thompson, Hartley and Huff. Then youth is again demonstrated in Stevenson, Hirini, Robinson and Procter, with a steadying up in Taylor, Moses, Andrews and Co. A light tealm on the whole but with improved combination and consistent training, they will give a good account of themselves before the season is over or their coach, Mr. F. Robinson, will want to know the reason why. How they will shape in heavy going is yet to be proved. f Shannon, on the other hand, is well supplied with senior players of a heavier type and this was
demonstrated on Saturday when _ they had no difficulty in pushing their light opponents in close work and were successful in working the scrums. Foxton’s superiority was in the back division. The game was fast and willing throughout and free from trouble. Shannon opened hostilities with the sun at their backs and quickly invaded the home territory. Procter and Moses eased the pressure temporarily, but McKenzie, Pickard and Goodwin kept Foxton busy defending and 'N. Robbie essayed an unsuccessful drop kick. Taylor found the line at centre and Thompson carried on. Taylor had a shot from a penalty but missed. Foxton continued the attack and Warman .attempting to clear the ball
rebounded off a Foxton player and a force down saved the ■situation. Both 1 tealms were playing with vigour with Foxton pressing. Thompson got away down the line but was pushed out at the corner. Foxton continued to attack until Robbie broke away and earned play to the centre. Hirim was prominent in a dodgy run and Renata and Stevenson carried on hut Walls saved. Payne (Shannon) received an injury and was replaced by Williams. Stevenson and Renata were prominent in an attacking movement from the centre and Taylor streaked down and transferred to Hartley who finished by running behind in a handy position. Hirini made no mistake with the kick —Foxton 5 —'Shannon nil. Walls, McKenzie, Pickard and Goodwin headed an attack into Foxton’s territory where a 'force was accepted. From the kick out Shannon would not be denied but Stevenson sent them back. Moses marked and Vertongen returned, and Johannah and Williams swopped down on Taylor who had to drop the oval and Williams crossed. Pickajrd failed with the kick from a difficult angle—'Shannon 3 —Foxton 5. Foxton got going with a combined attack and Robinson failed to gather a pass, but Thompson got possession and forced his way over at the corner. Stevenson failed with the kick. Foxton B—Shannon8 —Shannon 3. Procter centred a return and Hirini, Thompson, Robinson and Taylor got within striking distance but a ground pass spoilt the attack and Shannon cleared but Procter put in a tine dodgy run and again Foxton was knocking at Shannon’s door and a force down was accepted. Taylor had a shot at goal but the spell ended with no further score.
With the; sun at their backs Foxton gained an advantage but Shannon renewed their- efforts but their full back was handicapped by the sun and failed to return. Hindu, Andrews, Huff, Stevenson and Thompson kept up the attack and Hirini shot the ball out to Taylor who crossed. Stevenson’s kick failed—Foxton 11 —Shannon 3. The gaJme was now particularly strenuous and Foxton by their high tackling were letting Shannon through, and Dalzell, Walls, Satherley and Williams were particularly prominent. Robinson marked and Hartley, Andrews, Hindu and Co. swept down the held, but Shannon come back and Procter was penalised for “rabbiting.” The Foxton backs cleared by a combined movement and Moses carried on and whipped out to Thompson who came on at the gallop but failed to ga-
ther the ball, but Hindu and Hartley were there but a force was the result. Foxton again attacked and Huff completed the movetment bv crossing and Hirini added the major points—Foxton 16 —Shannon 3. Both teams kept going at a merry pace and some really good movements were witnessed. Towards the close Foxton got the upper hand and Taylor had a chance to increase Foxton’s score from a penalty but it went wide. Foxton thus winning a strenuously fought game by a margin of 13 points. Foxton’s backs were superior but in close attacking .movements Shannon’s weight was an advantage. The game was free from any roughness and Mr. J. O’Connor with the whistle, controlled the game with the utmost satisfaction to both sides and spectators.
JUNIOR GAME. FOXTON (21) v. WERAROA (8). On the Weraroa ground on Saturday last, the.Foxton juniors met Weraroa in the final game of the first round, comfortably winning by 21 to 8. Weraroa won the toss and elected to kick against the sun. Their forwards started well', and with kick and rush tactics, they kept the Foxton backs Ibusy defending for some time. Persistently pressing the home tealm were eventually rewarded; N. Wilson crossing over and opening the scoring account. Weraroa 3 —.Foxton nil. The Foxton forwards from the kick out began to pack better, and dribble with more purpose. Hai’tley was endeavouring to get his backs in action, hut they were not making much progress. Up till now the game bad not been a good exhibition, too much wild kicking being indulged in by both teams. From an exchange of kicks Procter followed up a rolling ball and crossing over brought the scores level. The extra points were not added and a few minutes later orange time was called with the scores —Weraroa 3—Foxton 3. The second spell opened sensationally, W. Broughton picking up the ball in the centre of the field, and running clean through, to score near the posts. He passed five Foxton men, their attempts at tackling being most feeble. Be then added the extra points, the score now being Weraroa B—Foxton8 —Foxton 3. 'This reverse evidently brought the yellows up with a jolt, for right from the kick out they took charge of the game, and raced the whites back and forward, until the- final whistle. From a segum Hartley sent his backs away, Williams with a clever dummy making a perfect opening, - handed on to Procter, to Croon who finished the movement with a try. The revival had also affected Huff, who .kicked a great goal. Weraroa B—Foxton8 —Foxton 8.
No sooner had the whites kicked out than they wore defending again,' and getting the ball frolm a scrum, the yellow backs made no mistake, Huff I dashed in for a beautiful try. The kick was charged down. Foxton 11 —-Weraroa 8. The whites were now getting tired, and Findlay, Wright and Rankin were making it fast, opening up to their backs. The former broke out and set the yellow rearguard in action, a perfect bout of passing culminating in Croon scoring his second. Huff was sure and true with his kick. Foxton 16 —Weraroa 8. Still hammering away Hartley fed the other wing for a change, arid Robinson scored another good try. Huff another goal and shortly afterwards time was called with the score —Foxton 21 —Weraroa 8. AH. J. Smith gave satisfaction with the whistle.
LOCAL TIHRDS DEFEAT SHANNON.
The local Thirds had an easy victory over Shannon on the racecourse on Saturday winning the game by 28 points to 3. Shannon fielded only 14 men, but the superior combination of the Foxton backs was too clever for the visitors. Shannon won the toss and defended the northern goal. From the kick-off Shannon took the ball into Foxton’s territory where Booker was tackled well by New,son. Foxton dribbled well down field and when the ball came out from tho ruck the Foxton half snapping up transferred to N. Easton, who fell over the line foil- a lucky try, Huff taking the lack 'and' igddiijng the extra two points. Mabey taking the kiick-off, sent the ball out well into Foxton’s 25.
