BOROUGH RUBBISH REMOVAL SYSTEM.
DISCUSSED BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. At last night’s Borough Council meeting a recommendation was read from the local Chamber of Commerce recommending that the Council give favourable consideration to the inauguration of a irnbbish removal system in the borough. The Alayor referred to the system which was unsuccessfully put into operation some time ago. Cr. Cowley said the Council did rot have any horse or cart for the work. The Mayor: We will have to raise the rates to do the filing properly. The Clerk said that there was a good place to tip rubbish over the river bank in the Lady’s Mile and if this was done the cost of carting should 'be reduced considerably. • Cr. Thompson's suggestion was that applications should be called for the work but jCr. Cowley favoured a canvass being- made by a Council employee to see how rn a unfavoured the .system. Cr. Barron said that 'farm lands in the borough could be excluded. A system of some description should be inaugurated in the interests of public health. C'r. Robinson said that it should be compulsory for business people to keep their back yards clean. The best thing to do was to get a carrier lo undertake the work. The Clerk suggested obtaining the services of a'earner one day a week for six months to see how the system would be patronised. It (was decided, however, to refer the matter to the Works Cbimmittce and that a canvass of the town be made before any action is taken.
