BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. Tho monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last night. Reports were read and dealt wit'll as follows: WATER AND DRAINAGE REPORT The waterworks foreman (Mr. W. Neville) reported that during the month one water service was laid, two valves repaired, five hydrants and one house drain cleaned and the storage tank under the pumping station opened for inspection by the Government Health Offilcer. The inspection showed the tank to be perfectly clean. The electric motor was overhauled during the month. During the coming month it is proposed to put in a (by-pass ■between the pump and the tower to stop the sudden jerk on the motor when the pump picks up the water. During the .month 1,350,000 gallons of water was pumped, the maximum current used (being 28 aimps.—Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman ( My. A. G. Huntley) reported as follows: — During the month the road staff has been engaged in completing the top dressing of the footpath in Duncan Street, asphalting the intersections of Russell Street and Avenue Road, weeding asphalt at junction of Main and Union Streets, cleaning Awahou, Johnston Street and AveViue (Road drains and general maintenance work. During the present month it is intended to patch breaks in the bitumen and ruts in the metalled roads, and to carry on with drain cleaning work. —Adopted.
ICr. Cowley drew the Council’s attention to the fact that there was a resolution on the books providing for the tar-sealing of the triangle of grass at the intersection of Alain, and Park Streets and Avenue Road. This had been chipped ready for tar-sealing on one occasion and then left and it was now overgrown again. The Mayor said the work was to be done when more important works had been carried out. With the completion of the now Courthouse this work would have to receive attention, however. i Gr. Barron reported that the corner of Park and Victoria Streets was cutting up badly and required attention. Gr. A. R, Crowe made a suggestion that the Road Foreman should keep a record of his time in order that the Council should know what jobs were costing- the most. If this was done it might be possible to effect a saving in some directions. Cr. F. Robinson said that it appeared. to him that the Road Foreman 'already had too much work to do. If‘dr. Crowe’s suggestion was put into operation he would want a private secretary to go around with him. As far as lie could see there was enough work in the borough at the present time for ten men for a month. It was decided to refer the abovementioned matters to the Road Forejman. CORRESPONDENCE. uas read and dealt with as follows: — From the Horowhenua Rugby Union, offering the Council a flat rental of £lO for the season for the use of Easton Park for football purposes.—Accepted, and on Cr. Robinson’s suggestion it was decided to donate some posts and wire to the local Club to have a fence erected on the ground. From the Main Highways Board, intimating that the Alanawatu County Council had consented to take over the control of the Shannon Bridge.—(Received. From the Shannon Borough Council asking the Council to support a request, to the Manawatu County Council that the Shannon Bridge be officially opened.—Supported.
From the Palmerston North Hospital Board, enclosing copy of estimates for the ensuing year.—Received. THE CEMETERY. Various matters were discussed relative to the Cemetery. €r. Lucinsky said lie had a motion on the Council's hooks that a cutting in the Cemetery be widened but as yet this work had not been carried out. Cr. Cowley referred to the fact that the Cemetery account was well in funds and tha^something should be done to have the grass cut before the winter set in properly. Cr. Robinson said a tar-sealed roadway should bo laid down through the Cemetery. It was no good hoarding the money up. In its present condition the Cemetery had a very neglected appearance. Cr. Barron endorsed the remarks of the two previous speakers. iCr. Thompson said .the roadway question was not a new one. It had been raised fourteen or fifteen years ago but the expense had always proved too much. The Clefik submitted an estimate of £l9l 15s Od for an eight feet path. The Mayor said that within a few years more ground would have to be acquired for the Cemetery and this would mean a good deal of expenditure for fencing, etc. A metalled track was useless as weeds would grow over it and the tar sealed road was too expensive. Or. Robinson: The road is veiy necessary, nevertheless. 'Cr. Cowley moved that the Reserves Committee go into the matter and report to next meeting, the motion being carried.
