SURFING FATALITY.
YOUNG MAN LOSES HIS LIFE. Dunedin, Last Night. Jaimes Raekley, a young man, aged 20 years, was drowned while bathing in the sm'f at St. Kilda yesterday aifternoon. Accompanied ‘by a girl named Marion O’Connell, he was bathing about 100 yard's .on the Lawyer’s Head side of the safety .zone, which is clearly marked by two red Hags. 'There were few people about at the time but those who saw the bathers did not at first realise they were in any danger, as both swimmers were within their depth. On healing the girl call out, another swimmer helped her to shore, while two others attempted to swim out to Raekley. A heavy surf was running and this, in conjunction with the strong tide rip setting towards Lawyer’s .Head, rendered their efforts futile and by the time they were able to reach the spot where Raekley was last seen, he had disappeared. Radicle, was employed at Shacklock’s foundry. This is the first drowning accident which has occurred at St. Kilda for nearly five years. The body has not yet been recovered.
