PALMERSTON NORTH OR MANAWATU?
The opinion is expressed by Air. M. A. Eliott, president of the Palmerston North 'Chamber of Commerce,- in his report that Palmerston North has reached the point of qualification for city status on a population basis. “When this change takes place it would be a favourable opportunity to alter the name from Palmerston North to Alanawatu,” states the report. “To people living outside the district any objection to the change seems inexplicable, it being' considered that Palmerston North is not a name in keeping with either its importance or its position and surroundings. On the other hand, the •business people of the town have given their almost unanimous support in favour of the proposed change and many prominent people throughout New Zealand have repeatedly pointed out the advisability of doing so.”
Opposition to the proposed filching of the name Manawatu which designates the county to glorify the Palmerston status as a city will be strenuously opposed throughout the Alanawatu.
