LUCKY TO BE ALIVE
WHY POWER WAS CUT OFF ON MONDAY. The cause of the interruption to the power supply from Waikaremoana on Alonday shortly after noon, which was experienced in Levin, has been traced by the Public Works staff with astonishing results. As a result of the interruption the lines were patrolled and , the discovery was made that a farmer had been straining up a private telephone line in the vicinity of Napier which passed under the main 110,000 volt lines ejonveyibig the power from the Waikaremoana power station. In straining up the telephone line it was pulled up to such a point that it made contact with the power lines, thus operating the earth leakage relays of WLaikaremoana and cutting off the power to no less than eight power boards.
The farmer says that he got two shocks and saw two flashes. How lie was not killed outright is a mar - vel to the electrical engineers. Mr. Robinson, district electric engineer at Shannon, stated last night that the telephone line was found yesterday, the wires being barely Dwindles below the live Waikaremoana power-lines operating at 110,000 volts.
