DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN COOK.
RESIDENT M CHRISTCHURCH. Christchurch, February 7. That descendants of Captain Cook are residing in Christchurch was revealed to members of the executive of the Canterbury Progress League when, a letter Avas received from Mrs. E. E. Beniams, of 447 Worcester Street, who stated that she was a great grand-daugh-tdf of the famous captain. She stated that she would like to meet the generous donor of the £SOO towards a 'Canterbury memorial to Captain Cook, and to discuss the matter with him. She felt that the result of such a discussion Avould he satisfactory to all Now Zealanders and generous givers to the scheme. Mrs. Beniams also stated that she A\ r as unable to attend the meeting OAving to an injured ankle, but her tAvo sons, Messrs Sidney John Hearn an accountant in the employ of the municipal electricity department, and William Beniams, a student of the engineering department of Canterbury College, would be able to represent her at any time. Her eldest son Avas killed in the Great War.
The letter was addressed to the Progress League because of the league having undertaken to arrange for a public meeting at which the question of a memorial to Captain Cook would be discussed. Arrangements for the public meeting were left to the organiser (Mia P. R. Climie).
