Mr. 11. Robinson, of Thvnne St., is at present on holiday in the Taranaki district. Mr. and Mrs, 11. 11. Hornblow and family returned to Nelson to-day after spending a holiday in Foxton.
Miss R. Lancaster, of Wanganui, is at present on a holiday visit to Foxton as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Hornblow. Mr. and Mrs. J. 11. Downes called in to Foxton yesterday on their way Ibadk to Nelson after a visit to Wanganui where Mr. Downes has been attending the gas engineers’ conference. The death occurred at Pahiatua on Tuesday morning of Mother Mary Be Sales Maher, aged 78. Deceased joined the Brigidine Order in Ireland in 1880, and .went to Australia, coming to New Zealand in 1906. She had laboured at Pahiatua during the last 23 years. The Rev. Howard Elliott, who has been the national lecturer and Dominion secretary of the Protestant Political Association, and editor of “The* Sentinel,” has resigned •from the association. Mr. Elliott, who was the founder of the association eleven years ago, has been a prominent .figure in the work of the -organisation during that period. The death occurred at New’ Plymouth last night of Mr. John Heslop, at t'he age of 90 years. The late Mr. Heslop was one of the best-known of Taranaki pioneers. He came to New Zealand in 1857 and after fanning successfully in Hawke’s Bay, the South Island, the Hawke’s Bay again and Wanganui, he finally became established in Taranaki.
Mr. J. G. Eliott, ex-M.P. for Oroua, received a public presentation of a purse of sovereigns at Feiiding on Tuesday. The Mayor presided over a large gathering of friends, and the guests included Sir George Hunter, Mr. J. A. Nash, Mr. J. Linklater, and Mr. J. Dickie, M.P.’s, also the Hon. F. J. Rolleston. The presentation was made by Sir George Hunter, who praised Mr. Eliott for his services to the fanning community, especially mentioning the Fertilizer Bill.
A visitor to Foxton yesterday was Mr. Donald McLeod, late editor and proprietor of the Lake County Press, at Arrowtown. The Press, ■by the way, has now’ been merged with 'the AVlakatipu Mail. Mr. M!cLeod was also interested in pastoral pursuits, and during his residence in Arrowtown took a keen and active interest in all matters of interest to the district. He was also school commissioner for some time. Mr. McLeod was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Barron.
A wedding which evinced considerably more than the usual interest w r as celebrated at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Palmerston N. last evening, the church being thronged. The contracting parties were George Wong Yew, of Auckland, son of Dr. Wong Dunn Yew, of Canton, China, and Edith Helen Biikinshaw, daughter of Mr. T. C. Birkinshaw, of Palmerston North. After an extensive motor tour of the South Island, the happy couple will leave for a honeymoon tour of the East. On returning to New Zealand they will take up their residence in Auckland.
