WORKING UNDER DIFFICULTIES.
The local police are at present working under great difficulties pending the erection of the new courthouse. 'The old building is being utilised until the new building
completed and office routine is being carried on despite the fact that every now and again the old building gives a lurch and moves a few feet to the accompaniment of groans and creeks and the rumbling of rollers. The floor the while is c overed with brick dust and it is impossible to keep the place tidy owing to the absence of the two chimneys and a pane or two of glass. Nevertheless the local constables prefer to stick to the old building rather than remove the tremendous amount of correspondence, files, statutes and hooks, etc. which have aecuniimulated during the courthouse’s long period of usefulness. The coroner, Mr. A. Fraser spent a trying three-quarters of an hour on Monday, conducting' an inquiry into the death of Mr. R. T. Folglasc, who was drowned at Manawatu Heads on Sunday. The building shook and swayed as if a severe and lengthly earthquake was being experienced while hammering made it very difficult to hear the evidence that was being tendered. The contractor (Mr. T. Hunt) is to be commended on the expeditious manner in which he is handling his contract.
