TOBACCO GROWING

OPERATIONS IN NELSON. Nelson, January 5. Air. Gerhard Husheer, managing director of the National Tobacco Company Ltd., of Napier, which takes large supplies of tobacco leaf from the district, is at present in Nelson. Interviewed, he said that 1000 acres were down in tobacco this year for his company. As ithe pioneers of tobacco-growing in this district their objective had been to encourage a mVmber of farmers to produce the kind of leaf they required. The fact that there were now 7 200 names on the waiting list to grow for them proved that theii efforts were appreciated and valued.

Last year, Nelson growers under contract to the company had been paid £50,000 for leaf, and Mr. Husheer anticipates that the increased crop this year will mean a pay-out of about £75,000, as the contracts with growers were for all the leaf produced on the areas specified. There was no doubt, said ADHusheer, that the Nelson soil and climate were mlost suited for to-bacco-growing. It had been his objective to encourage tobaccogrowing as a side-line in mixed farming, and there had been an abundance of evidence that the returns had proved a most welcome and valuable addition to the farm revenue. On an average, the net return per acre w 7 as £55. Like so many other things, tobacco-grow-ing could be overdone. The world’s markets were over-supplied, and he did not hold out much hope for the grower who was simply relying on marketing his leaf abroad.
